The local authorities in Toronto warned of a combination of severe weather conditions expected to affect the city on Monday, as extreme temperatures will coincide with a significant decline in air quality.
The Canadian Ministry of Environment issued a heat warning, expecting temperatures to reach levels exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, with a heat index that may approach 40 degrees due to high humidity.
Experts also warned that air quality will deteriorate due to the concentration of ozone and fine particles, which may pose a risk to the health of vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and people suffering from chronic respiratory diseases.
The authorities urged city residents to avoid strenuous physical activities outdoors during peak heat, to drink plenty of water, and to stay in air-conditioned places as much as possible.
This warning comes as part of a heat wave affecting large parts of southern Ontario, with forecasts expecting severe conditions to continue until midweek.
