The Canadian Environment Centre has issued a warning of a severe heat wave that will affect the Ottawa and Gatineau areas starting Monday, with temperatures expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius, while the perceived temperatures may go beyond 40 degrees Celsius due to high humidity.

The centre explained that the hot and humid air will persist for several days, increasing the risk of heat stress and heat strokes, especially for the elderly, children, people with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers.

The wave is expected to last until the end of this week, with the possibility of high temperatures remaining even during nighttime hours, which may exacerbate the difficulty in adapting to it, particularly for individuals without adequate cooling facilities.

Local authorities have urged residents to take preventive measures such as drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous activities during peak times, and staying in air-conditioned places whenever possible. They also advised checking on at-risk relatives and neighbors.

Health officials confirmed that cooling centers will be available at several locations throughout the city, to assist residents in coping with the high temperatures.
