Air quality in Toronto continues to record one of the worst levels globally, coinciding with the ongoing heat wave hitting the city this week.

According to air quality index data issued by IQAir on Tuesday morning, Toronto ranked fourth among the most polluted major cities worldwide, ahead of capitals and major cities in Asia and South America.

Environment Canada indicated that high temperatures, exceeding 30 degrees Celsius with increased humidity, lead to worsening pollution levels and increased health risks, especially for the elderly, children, and those with chronic respiratory diseases.

The health authorities issued strict warnings regarding the poor air quality, advising residents to avoid outdoor physical activity and reduce prolonged exposure to high heat.

Weather experts also explained that this heat wave may continue until the end of the week, with a possible gradual decline in ozone levels and airborne pollutants if wind movement improves.

These developments come while cooling centers throughout the city are operating at full capacity to accommodate residents seeking refuge from the heat, as fire and emergency teams remain on alert to face any fires or emergencies related to severe weather conditions.
