A 77-year-old man died in a horrific accident on Highway 401 near Toronto Pearson International Airport, after being struck by a vehicle while on the road on Saturday morning.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that the accident occurred around 6 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the highway, near the Carlingview Road interchange, leading to the closure of several lanes for hours to investigate and gather evidence.
An OPP spokesperson said the victim died at the scene from his serious injuries, describing the incident as an “absolute tragedy,” adding that authorities are still working to determine why the man was on the highway at that time.
The vehicle driver was taken to the hospital in shock, and the police confirmed that he is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations. No charges have been filed yet, and the police have called on any eyewitnesses or dashcam owners to come forward with information to help with the investigation.
This incident highlights once again the significant dangers posed by pedestrians on highways and the community’s need for greater awareness and caution in such high-risk areas.
