A new study issued by the organization “Maytree” revealed that nearly 98 percent of Canadian families receiving social assistance live below the poverty line, highlighting a serious gap between the aid provided and basic living needs.
According to the report, social support programs in most Canadian provinces do not provide beneficiaries with sufficient income to meet basic needs such as food, housing, and clothing, placing them in a chronic state of poverty that is difficult to escape.
The report's authors pointed out that these figures reflect the failure of current policies to ensure a minimum level of living dignity, confirming that some beneficiaries live on less than 50% of the poverty line in some cases.
The organization called for a reconsideration of social policies and an update of support programs to align with the rising cost of living in Canada, especially with the increasing inflation rates and housing crisis in several major cities.
The report concluded that the continuation of this situation would deepen social gaps and undermine efforts aimed at reducing poverty and ensuring equal opportunities among citizens.
