The Durham Regional Police announced today, Wednesday, the arrest of a 12-year-old boy in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred in the city of Pickering east of Toronto, resulting in a woman being transported to the hospital in serious condition.
The police reported that the incident took place on Tuesday morning in a residential neighborhood near the intersection of Kingston and Dixie Roads, where emergency teams received a report of a knife attack. Upon arrival, they found a woman suffering from multiple injuries, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The police confirmed that the suspect fled the scene before being apprehended later, noting that he is undergoing investigation, and charges related to aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for the purpose of harm have been laid against him.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the motives and circumstances of the incident, while the police confirmed that the perpetrator and the victim know each other, and it is not believed that the incident was random.
The incident has shocked the local community, especially given the young age of the suspect, amidst calls for increased community awareness and prevention of violence among youth.
