The Parti Québécois (PQ) announced that it will stand alongside the Quebec Alliance (Avenir Quebec (CAQ)) if a referendum is held on immigration policy.

Prime Minister François Legault threatened last Tuesday to hold a referendum on immigration if negotiations with Justin Trudeau's federal government do not conclude.

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, PQ leader, is asking Legault to commit to holding a referendum if he does not obtain full powers regarding immigration at the end of this meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister.

Interim Liberal leader Marc Tanguay said François Legault has powers concerning immigration and should begin to implement them effectively, and if we want to push the Canadian federation forward, we cannot build trust relationships by threatening to hold referendums."

The Quebec Solidaire (QS) party announced that it also wants full powers regarding immigration but did not mention whether it would campaign alongside the government in a potential referendum.

Christine Labrie, a deputy in Quebec Solidaire, stated: "We ask François Legault to start working and use all the powers available to him, and we support obtaining full powers regarding immigration. Do we need a referendum for this? Let's start using the powers we have."
She said at a press conference yesterday Wednesday: "If the door closes for the thousandth time in François Legault's face, then call for a referendum on the restoration of full powers in the field of immigration, and in this case, I will stand by him.
