The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a health warning today, Friday, which is the most serious this year after announcing the recall of 1.7 million cartons of certified organic brown eggs produced by August Egg Company, based in California.

This warning comes after 79 confirmed cases of salmonella illness in seven U.S. states, amid warnings of a potential increase in cases in the coming days as the scope of the epidemiological investigations widens.

The FDA noted that the contaminated eggs were distributed to retailers and restaurants in several states, and preliminary investigations suggest that the consumption of this product is directly linked to the confirmed salmonella infections.

The statement clarified that salmonella illness can cause severe symptoms, including diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, which usually appear 6 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food.
