A recent study conducted by Uppsala University in Sweden revealed a troubling link between lack of sleep and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, even among healthy young individuals.

The study, which published its results recently, found that sleep deprivation for three consecutive nights – averaging only 4 hours per night – leads to serious changes in the blood, including elevated levels of inflammatory proteins, which are substances normally released by the body in times of stress or illness, but become destructive if they persist, contributing to vascular damage and increasing the likelihood of heart failure, coronary artery disease, and heart rhythm disorders.

According to the researchers, these effects were evident just a few days after insufficient sleep, reflecting the fast and dangerous impact of sleep disturbances on the cardiovascular system, even among young people who are in good health.

The study also demonstrated that lack of sleep undermines the known health benefits of exercise. When sleep deprived, the normal response of healthy proteins such as “Interleukin-6” and “Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor” (BDNF) was reduced, which are proteins that support heart and brain health.

Most concerning, the timing of blood sample collections showed significant variation in protein levels between morning and evening among those who did not get enough sleep, indicating a clear disruption in the body's biological clock and its effect on biochemical processes.

Researchers at Uppsala University described these findings as a “health alarm,” asserting that sleep is not a luxury, but a vital necessity for maintaining health and longevity. They stated that “sacrificing hours of sleep for work or leisure could cost our bodies dearly.”

Based on these findings, experts recommend getting 7 to 9 hours of good sleep each night, considering it an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, alongside balanced nutrition and regular physical activity.
