A group of protesters was expelled from the legislature after a second proposal by the New Democratic Party calling for unanimous approval to lift the ban on the keffiyeh failed.

Visitors to Queen's Park began to shout as Government House Leader Paul Calandra responded to questions about the ban by talking about how his party had achieved a "diverse party gathering."

The legislative session was suspended for 15 minutes.

The Ontario New Democratic Party made its first attempt to lift the ban last week. It did not receive unanimous approval.

The decision to ban the keffiyeh, worn by Palestinians, Muslims, and Arabs, was made by Speaker of the House Ted Arnott, who said there is a "long-standing" policy regarding the wearing of political symbols in the assembly.

He told reporters last week: "It's clear that this is politically very sensitive, but procedurally, I believe I made the right decision regarding the previous rulings of speakers, precedents, and traditions."

One member who voted against the proposal is Robin Martin, who issued a statement on Tuesday saying she intends to continue voting against it.

She said: "The rules of the legislature are clear that props and clothing that make a political statement may not be worn in the chamber."

"These rules exist to maintain peace in our democratic institutions and to ensure that we use our words solely for discussion and persuading one another. I believe these rules are important for the proper functioning of the legislative body and should be adhered to."

On Tuesday, independent MLA Sarah Jama was seen wearing the keffiyeh openly in the legislature. Even during her time at home until noon.

Earlier in the morning, a collective meeting with the New Democratic Party was told that they could not attend while wearing the keffiyeh.

Dania Majid, from the Canadian Arab Lawyers Association, told CTV News Toronto: "They are literally stripping me of my dignity, and that's why we decided not to take off our keffiyehs to enter inside."
