Ottawa, Ontario – Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for the Ottawa and Gatineau areas, with expectations that a low-pressure system will bring winter weather conditions to Eastern Ontario starting Monday evening.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, the agency warned that freezing rain could be heavy in some areas overnight, potentially affecting road conditions, pathways, and outdoor surfaces. The warning indicated a risk of ice accumulation, making travel hazardous for both drivers and pedestrians.

Freezing rain is expected to continue throughout the night before transitioning to regular rain by Tuesday morning as temperatures gradually rise. The duration and intensity of the freezing rain will vary based on local temperatures and precipitation patterns.

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for the Ottawa and Gatineau areas, coinciding with the movement of a low-pressure system across Eastern Ontario.

Freezing rain is expected to begin Monday evening and continue overnight, with potential ice accumulation of up to 10 mm, increasing travel risks and threatening power outages.

Forecasts indicate that the freezing rain will turn to regular rain by Tuesday morning due to rising temperatures. However, there are additional warnings in Western Quebec regarding heavy snowfall, with expected accumulations in some areas reaching 15 cm or more.

What to expect?

• Timing: Freezing rain is expected to begin late Monday evening and continue throughout the night.

• Impact: Slippery roads and pathways, poor driving conditions, and the potential for power outages due to ice accumulation on power lines and trees.

Safety measures

Environment Canada advises residents to:

• Avoid unnecessary travel during freezing rain.

• Exercise caution when walking outside to avoid slips and falls.

• Equip their vehicles with emergency supplies in case travel is necessary.

• Continuously monitor weather updates and road conditions.

Freezing rain warnings are issued when there are expectations of significant ice accumulation that can cause hazardous conditions and disruptions to transport and infrastructure.
