The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that senior nuclear envoys from South Korea, the United States, and Japan will hold talks in the capital Seoul this week to discuss the latest military provocations by North Korea amid its growing relations with Russia.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that Kim Jung, the special representative for peace and security affairs on the Korean Peninsula, will meet with his American counterpart Jung Baek and Japanese Hiroyuki Namazu for trilateral talks next Thursday.

Kim will also hold separate bilateral talks with Namazu tomorrow, Wednesday, and with Baek on Thursday before the trilateral talks.

The ministry spokesman Lim Soo-suk said in a press conference that the three "intend to exchange their assessments of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, including North Korea's recent provocations and escalating tensions, its military cooperation and exchanges with Russia, and discuss response measures to that."

These talks come at a time when North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui is scheduled to hold talks with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow today, Tuesday. The Kremlin said it intends to continue developing its partnership with Pyongyang "in all fields."

Choe's visit also comes amid concerns that North Korea is providing weapons to Russia for use in Moscow's war on Ukraine in exchange for Moscow's technical assistance in developing advanced weapons.
