Toronto – The Office of Ontario Premier Doug Ford emphasized the need for Canada to act quickly and without pause to reach a trade agreement with the United States, following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of his intention to impose additional tariffs on Canadian imports.
A spokesperson for Ford's office stated in an official statement that “the federal government must work around the clock to ensure the protection of Canadian jobs, workers, and industries,” warning that any new tariffs would directly harm the local economy and cross-border supply chains.
This stance comes after Trump's remarks to NBC News in which he confirmed his intention to impose tariffs of up to 35% on imports coming from Canada starting next month, a step he described as necessary to “rebalance” the bilateral trade relationship.
The statement issued by the Ontario government added: “We urge Ottawa to use all diplomatic and trade means to find an urgent solution before these measures come into effect.”
For its part, the federal government confirmed that it is considering options for response and negotiation, while several economic experts warned that this U.S. move could escalate trade tensions and impact vital sectors such as the automotive, steel, and aluminum industries.
