The Rabat – The General Directorate of National Security in Morocco announced the thwarting of a terrorist plot that aimed to carry out remote detonations using explosives connected to mobile phones, during a precise security operation that lasted over a year of surveillance and tracking.

During a press conference, the spokesman for the directorate, Bouabcar Sabik, revealed that the dismantled cell, linked to the "ISIS" organization, was in advanced stages of planning, as one of the suspects had taken steps to flee to the organization's strongholds in the African Sahel region.

Sabik confirmed that investigations showed the suspects relied on educational materials published on closed platforms to learn techniques for making explosives and handling weapons. He also revealed that the potential targets included sensitive security and economic institutions, in addition to targeting law enforcement personnel, with the possibility of carrying out suicide operations using explosive belts.

He pointed out that the leader of the cell, known as Abdul Rahman Al-Sahrawi, is a Libyan national, and that research is ongoing to determine his full identity and the extent of his connections to terrorist organizations. He emphasized that the recent security operation succeeded in neutralizing a strategic threat aimed at destabilizing the region.
