The police announced that the armed confrontation in southeast Calgary that began on Thursday when officers were shot at while attempting to execute a search warrant "is no longer a threat to public safety."

According to the police, the situation "escalated" around 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday, when members of the Calgary Tactical Unit and the RCMP Emergency Response Team were forced to discharge their weapons.

The police said a man was killed, and Chief Mark Neufeld confirmed in a statement, "Police are allowing some people to return to their homes, but officers had to remain on scene overnight to investigate the matter."

During an earlier press conference on Friday evening, Joe Prar from the Calgary Police Service Operational Support described the situation as "under control" but serious - saying at that time the threat level remained high because the suspect was actively shooting at police.

The Calgary police said in a statement early Saturday morning, "We estimate that more than 100 rounds were fired, and we are very grateful that no officers or bystanders were injured as a result."

On Thursday, the police reported that shots had been fired toward Tactical Unit officers at a residence in Penbrooke Meadows at 3:30 p.m. during an ongoing firearms investigation.

The police said: "Several uninvolved individuals were safely removed from the residence, and officers spoke with the suspect, asking him to surrender peacefully."

"After about 10 minutes, the suspect began firing from inside the house at the officers."

Residents in the Penbrooke area were asked to shelter in place, but the police posted addresses of those allowed to return to their homes.

Anyone unable to access their home due to this incident was asked to find alternative accommodation and can call 403-266-1234 if assistance is needed.

The residence in the 300 block of Penswood Way S.E.

Memorial Drive - a busy road in Calgary - was closed between 52 Street S.E. and 68 Street S.E. and was expected to remain closed until the incident was resolved.

In a Friday morning post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Neufeld said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta are assisting the city police.

The Calgary agency opened an information center at the Village Square Leisure Center at 2623 56 Street N.E., where snacks, water, showers, phone charging, emotional health support, and additional information were provided when available.

In a press release issued before 8 p.m. Friday, the police apologized to residents for the disturbance and fear caused by the situation.

The statement said, "Although we understand the fear, uncertainty, and frustration this causes, these measures are necessary to protect the public."

We recognize that this event has affected the sense of safety not only for Penbrooke Meadows residents but also for Calgary residents citywide. There have been ongoing disruptions with continuous road closures and access to homes and businesses, and we apologize for the inconvenience."

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting of the officer. Anyone needing support can contact the Calgary Police Victim Assistance Team at 403-428-8398, or toll-free at 1-888-327-7828.
