Cairo - A source in Egypt reported today, Tuesday, that the American administration has presented a new proposal to the Egyptian authorities in recent hours, aiming to revive mediation efforts between Hamas and Israel, and to reach a long-term ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
The Al-Araby Al-Jadeed newspaper quoted the source - who has not been named - as saying that the American proposal seeks to find a new "negotiation threshold" that paves the way for launching a political track to end the war that has been ongoing in Gaza for more than 16 months.
According to the same source, Washington hopes to reach a preliminary ceasefire agreement to be implemented before the expected visit of U.S. President Donald Trump to the region between May 13 and 15, which includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.
This move comes at a time when regional and international communications are intensifying to contain the escalation, amid increasing pressures on both Israel and Hamas to reach a temporary settlement that allows for the passage of humanitarian aid and prevents a complete collapse of the situation in the Gaza Strip.
