A number of child psychologists have called for a reconsideration of how schools honor students upon graduation, emphasizing that the exclusive focus on academic awards may overlook important aspects of a child's development and well-being.

According to a report published by CTV News, experts believe that current award systems tend to reward students with the highest grades while ignoring essential values such as perseverance, kindness, creativity, and collaboration, which are qualities that play a vital role in a child's long-term success.

Dr. Diana Brisman, a child psychologist at the University of Calgary, explains that this approach can sometimes lead other students to feel that their contributions are invisible or less valuable, negatively impacting their self-esteem. She adds: “When children feel that their efforts are only valued if they align with very specific standards, it can affect their intrinsic motivation to learn and grow.”

Experts call for a broader approach that recognizes the diversity of abilities and achievements. They suggest that schools create new recognition categories that include rewards for positive behavior, notable progress, social commitment, and leadership skills, thereby fostering a more inclusive and balanced educational environment.

In contrast, some advocates for academic excellence awards point out that recognition of academic achievements remains an important motivator for many students, but they also acknowledge that changing the recognition mechanisms could help enhance students' psychological well-being and inclusion.

The report concludes that this discussion reflects broader shifts in understanding the psychological and educational needs of children, amid increasing calls for recognition models that consider diversity and inclusivity, moving away from traditional standards that do not reflect the potential of all students.
