The health authorities in Japan reported on Monday that 130 people suffered from food poisoning after consuming "grilled eel" dishes, a popular dish in mid-summer in Japan, which was sold last week at a large store in Yokohama near Tokyo.
Those affected experienced symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, but most cases were not serious, according to the Yokohama city health center, which added that the only death among the infected was of a woman in her nineties, and the exact cause of her death is still unknown, according to the Kyodo News Agency.
According to the public health center, the "Nihonbashi Isikida" eel restaurant chain, based in Tokyo, sold more than 1,500 grilled eel dishes along with boxes of food filled with rice and eel on Wednesday and Thursday at the Kikuya store in the Kona area of Yokohama.
The health center stated that "Staphylococcus aureus" bacteria, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea, were found in the feces of some individuals who consumed the meals.
