Madrid – Arab Canada News
Spain experienced a widespread shutdown on Monday after a power outage affected large areas of the country, leading to chaotic traffic conditions in the capital, Madrid, and massive gatherings of citizens outside the main train station in Barcelona.
The impact of the outage extended to neighboring countries, with similar electrical disturbances reported in Portugal and parts of France, exacerbating the regional crisis. The metro services in Madrid were completely halted, leading to confusion in public transportation and essential institutions.
As a result, the Spanish government held an emergency meeting to discuss the repercussions of the crisis, amid a widespread shutdown affecting the sectors of communications, public services, and critical facilities.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told reporters that the communications sector is in a “critical” phase, urging citizens to use mobile phones responsibly to preserve the networks. Sánchez confirmed that “there is no conclusive information yet on the cause of the power outage,” noting that “there are no public security issues at this time.”
The Prime Minister added that payment systems and digital banking services are still functioning normally, reassuring citizens that the necessary measures to ensure the stability of essential services are ongoing.
Sánchez confirmed that the Spanish National Security Council will hold an additional meeting later today to assess the situation and review the precautionary measures needed to address the repercussions of the crisis.
