Two American officials told the American news site "Axios" on Wednesday that the White House has canceled a high-level U.S.-Israeli meeting regarding Iran that was scheduled to take place tomorrow, Thursday, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a video on Tuesday claiming that the United States is preventing military aid.
Anger over Netanyahu's ingratitude
An American and an Israeli source added that senior advisers to President Joe Biden were angered by the video, a message that U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein personally conveyed to Netanyahu in a meeting a few hours after it was published. After that, the White House decided to go further by canceling the Thursday meeting.
An American official stated: "This decision indicates that there are consequences for such reckless actions."
A senior Israeli official added: "Americans are angry. The video from Bibi (referring to Netanyahu) caused a lot of damage."
Axios noted that some Israeli officials were already on their way to Washington when the meeting was canceled.
Two American officials told Axios that the meeting was canceled to send a message regarding the video. Another official claimed that the meeting was postponed, not canceled, due to a scheduling issue.
In the video, Netanyahu stated in English that "it is unreasonable that over the past few months, the administration has been preventing arms and ammunition from reaching Israel."
Publicly, the White House expressed its astonishment. Its spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, noted that only one shipment of arms had been halted since the beginning of the war, while billions of dollars in weapons flowed freely. She said, "We truly do not know what he is talking about."
Secretly, Biden's team was angry and shocked by Netanyahu's "ingratitude," according to an American official.
Hochstein was scheduled to meet Netanyahu on Tuesday during his visit to Israel after Beirut, where he was trying to calm the situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border.
Upon entering the room, he told Netanyahu that the allegations in the video were inaccurate and crossed a line, according to two Israeli officials familiar with the meeting who spoke to Axios.
Additionally, senior advisers to Biden decided to cancel the strategic dialogue regarding Iran, which would have included hours of meetings with officials from the U.S. State Department, the Pentagon, and intelligence agencies, along with their Israeli counterparts.
An Israeli official confirmed that the White House informed Israel of the decision.
American officials stated that U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will still meet with his Israeli counterpart Tzachi Hanegbi, who has already left for the United States. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is still scheduled to visit Washington early next week.
Tensions in U.S.-Israel relations
Axios reported that relations between Biden's team and Netanyahu have become more strained now than at any time during the eight months since the war in Gaza began on October 7.
The American news site noted that this is the second time a strategic dialogue meeting on Iran has been canceled at the last minute.
Last March, Netanyahu was also the reason when the United States refused to veto a Security Council resolution that included a reference to a ceasefire in Gaza.
