Italian Yannick Sinner, ranked number one in the world, began his defense of the Canadian Open tennis title with a straight-sets win over Croatian Borna Coric late Thursday evening.
Sinner had missed the Paris Olympics due to a tonsil infection, but showed no signs of still suffering from health issues, as he took just an hour and a half to easily defeat Coric 6-2, 6-4, according to the British news agency "PA Media".
The Australian Open champion Sinner is preparing to play in the third round of the tournament against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, who later defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, fifth-ranked Russian Daniil Medvedev exited the tournament early after a surprising loss to Spanish Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Veteran Japanese player Kei Nishikori achieved his first win over a top 20 player since 2021, following his victory over Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, ranked 11th in the world, with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
American Brandon Nakashima also advanced to the third round after defeating compatriot Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 in a marathon match, setting up a meeting with Russian Andrey Rublev.
German Alexander Zverev, ranked fourth in the world, had no trouble overcoming Australian Jordan Thompson, winning 6-1, 6-1 to reach the third round.
Also advancing to the next round of the tournament currently taking place in Montreal are Norwegian Casper Ruud, Danish Holger Rune, and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
