(Agencies): The Washington Post revealed that the administration of former President Donald Trump canceled a memorandum put in place by the current President Joe Biden, which aimed to prevent allies from using American weapons in violation of international law.
According to the report, the canceled memorandum placed restrictions on American arms sales and their use by certain allied countries, to ensure they do not engage in violations of international humanitarian law.
The newspaper stated that this decision sparked widespread controversy within American political and diplomatic circles, as opponents believe it reduces pressure on allies to respect the rules of international law, and could lead to an escalation of conflicts in certain regions.
On the other hand, some entities defended the action, considering that lifting the restrictions allows Washington to strengthen its military and strategic alliances without binding its allies with strict political constraints.
This revelation comes at a time when the United States faces increasing international pressure to regulate its military exports and ensure they are not used in human rights violations or to escalate international crises.
