Media reports have revealed vulnerabilities in the vehicle registration system in Canada that facilitate car thefts and resale with forged documents, increasing the challenges faced by authorities in combating this rising phenomenon.

According to an investigation published by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), some thieves exploit the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) system, where stolen cars are re-registered using fake or borrowed identification numbers from other vehicles, allowing them to be reintroduced to the markets without raising suspicions.

The report indicated that these vulnerabilities make it easier for organized gangs to export stolen cars or resale them within the country, leading to a significant increase in car theft rates in Toronto and other cities in recent years.

In this context, experts in the automotive sector and government officials have called for tightening regulatory measures and improving mechanisms for verifying Vehicle Identification Numbers, as well as enhancing cooperation between federal and local authorities to curb these crimes.

These concerns come amid reports confirming that Canada has become one of the countries most affected by organized car thefts, prompting authorities to seek more stringent security and legal solutions to confront the escalating threat.
