U.S. authorities confirmed casualties in an attack targeting the "Pearl Street Mall" commercial center in downtown Boulder, Colorado, an incident that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) described as a "terrorist attack."
In a brief statement posted on social media, the office director, Kash Patel, said: "We are aware of a terrorist attack that occurred in Boulder. Our team is on the ground with local police, and we will provide an official update when more information is available."
Boulder police reported that the suspect has been apprehended and is now in custody, without disclosing their identity or motives at this time. They stated that they are responding to an incident involving "several victims" in the vicinity of the mall, without specifying the number of dead or injured.
According to CBS News, witnesses reported that the attack occurred during a march commemorating the Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip, where the attacker threw Molotov cocktails at the participants of the event, resulting in a fire and injuries.
Authorities are expected to hold a press conference at 4 PM Mountain Time (2200 GMT) to reveal details of the attack.
This incident comes just weeks after a similar event in Washington D.C., where a man was arrested for shooting at staff members of the Israeli embassy after they participated in an event organized by the American Jewish Committee, amid increasing warnings of a rise in violence linked to tensions in the Middle East.
U.S. authorities have pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack, as fears grow of a wave of attacks related to political or religious backgrounds.
