The U.S. Vice President, JD Vance, met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday in the Italian capital, Rome, to discuss fair trade policies as both countries seek to resolve the ongoing trade dispute over tariffs.

According to a statement from the U.S. Vice President's office, the talks addressed efforts to reach an agreement that ensures fairer trade relations between the two countries. The discussions also touched on enhancing cooperation in defense and security, as well as efforts to secure borders and combat the spread of fentanyl.

For its part, the Canadian Prime Minister's office confirmed that the meeting took place on the sidelines of their participation in the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV in Rome, where the event was attended by tens of thousands of international figures.

In a tweet on the platform “X,” Prime Minister Mark Carney described the talks as “positive and constructive,” emphasizing that “the strength of the relationship between the two countries lies in collaboration.”

Both sides expressed their commitment to stay in touch to follow up on developments and work to strengthen the economic and security partnership between Canada and the United States amid the current challenges in trade and security.
