U.S. President Donald Trump warned of a trade war with Canada after the Ontario government announced additional tariffs on electricity exports to the United States. Trump said this move is “unacceptable,” threatening to retaliate by imposing double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports.

In direct comments, Trump stated: “If Ontario thinks it can exploit the United States by imposing tariffs on electricity, we will respond strongly by doubling tariffs on steel and aluminum. We do not need their electricity, and we have other options.”

For his part, Ontario Premier Doug Ford sought to ease tensions, emphasizing that the proposed tariffs are intended to support the stability of the province's electricity grid, not to harm trade relations with the United States. Ford added: “We are looking to protect the interests of Ontarians, and we will work to communicate with our American partners to reach a balanced solution.”

These developments come at a sensitive time for trade relations between the United States and Canada, as several U.S. states rely on electricity exported from Ontario, raising concerns about the escalation of the trade dispute and its impact on energy and raw material markets.
