Washington – U.S. President Donald Trump announced today, Tuesday, that there is currently no intention to raise the tariffs imposed on Canadian goods, reiterating his administration's commitment to a "protectionist" approach in dealings with trade partners.
Trump made the statement during his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House, as part of an official visit aimed at discussing economic and trade disputes between the two countries. Trump told reporters: "We will not raise tariffs at this time. We are protecting our interests."
In response, Carney delivered a direct and clear message, saying: "Canada is not for sale. We defend our sovereignty and national interests, and we will continue to cooperate on fair and balanced terms."
This escalation comes amid rising tensions between the two countries over U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian exports that include lumber, aluminum, and agricultural products, policies that Ottawa says harm the historic relationship between the two neighbors and negatively affect both economies.
Negotiations between the two sides are still ongoing, amid expectations that discussions will continue in the coming days without decisive indications of a breakthrough in the trade crisis.
