The former U.S. President Donald Trump invited Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to attend the final of the Four Nations Hockey Championship with him, in an invitation that had a friendly tone but was not without controversy due to the way he referred to Trudeau.
During an election rally, Trump referred to the Canadian Prime Minister as “Governor Trudeau,” which is an inaccurate term in the Canadian political context, as Canada is governed by a parliamentary system and there is no position of “Governor” as in some U.S. states.
Trump's statements came amid his discussion about the relations between the United States and Canada, where he expressed interest in the final match of the championship, inviting Trudeau to join him in watching it. No official comment has been issued by the office of the Canadian Prime Minister regarding the invitation or the title Trump used.
These statements reflect Trump's continued unconventional interaction with international leaders, especially with the northern neighbor Canada, whose relations with his previous administration had witnessed some trade and political tensions.
