Ottawa - Agencies
The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that former U.S. President Donald Trump is seriously considering turning Canada into the 51st U.S. state, in the context of discussing the country's rich natural resources.
Leaked comments during a closed meeting
According to what the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation "CBC" reported, Trudeau's comments came during a closed meeting with business and labor leaders, but they were accidentally transmitted via a loudspeaker, leading to their public leak.
Trudeau said in his remarks:
“Mr. Trump takes into account that the easiest way to do this is to acquire our country, which is real. In my conversations with him…” before the sound was cut off, according to the agency's statement.
Trudeau indicated that the U.S. administration is fully aware of the vast natural resources that Canada possesses and aspires to leverage them significantly.
Reactions to the comments
Although there was no immediate official comment from Trudeau's office regarding the leaks, Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labor, confirmed the accuracy of what was said, posting on the "X" platform:
“Yes, I can confirm that Trudeau said his assessment is that what Trump really wants is not to move on fentanyl or immigration or even the trade deficit, but to dominate Canada or completely control it.”
Economic and strategic concerns
In other remarks on Friday, Trudeau emphasized the need for Canada to deal “tactically and strategically” with Trump's threats, which include imposing significant tariffs on all Canadian imports.
These developments come at a time when the American political scene is experiencing uncertainty regarding Trump's future policies should he return to the presidency, raising concerns within Canadian political and economic circles.
Anticipation and international reactions
Political circles in Washington and Ottawa are awaiting official clarifications regarding these comments, while analysts expect U.S.-Canadian relations to be under scrutiny if Trump wins a new presidential term.
