The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, met with King Charles III in London, amidst questions regarding the British monarch's stance on the threats made by former U.S. President, Donald Trump, regarding the possibility of annexing Canada to the United States.
Despite the controversy raised by Trump's statements, Buckingham Palace has not issued any official comment on the matter, prompting some Canadian politicians to call for a clear stance affirming Canada's sovereignty.
During his visit, Trudeau reaffirmed his government's commitment to protecting Canada's independence, emphasizing that the country's sovereignty "is not open for discussion." For their part, several officials and constitutional lawyers urged the Canadian government to take cautious diplomatic steps in dealing with this issue, pointing to the constitutional complexities that could arise in any discussion about the future of the monarchy in the country.
These developments come at a time when Canada is experiencing an increasing debate about the role of the British monarchy, especially in light of the royal palace's silence regarding issues affecting Canadian sovereignty.
