Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment of MP and former Minister of Transportation Omar Alghabra as Canada’s special envoy to Syria. Alghabra will advise Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly on supporting the Syrian people during the transition to an inclusive and peaceful future. His role will include consulting with experts and international partners to promote inclusive governance and protect human rights.
Alghabra was born in Saudi Arabia in 1969 and is of Syrian descent. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ryerson University and an MBA from York University. He worked with General Electric and the Ontario Energy Board before entering the political arena. He was first elected to Parliament in 2006 and has held several parliamentary positions, including Minister of Transportation in 2021.
It is noteworthy that Canada has been involved in diplomatic efforts to restore relations with Syria and provide humanitarian aid since December 2024. Last December, Canadian Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen announced an allocation of $17.25 million to support urgent needs in Syria.
Alghabra’s appointment is expected to enhance Canada’s role in supporting the Syrian people during this critical phase and work towards building a future of peace and justice for all Syrians.
