The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, made a phone call with the transitional Syrian president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, during which he confirmed Canada's commitment to support the Syrian people in their efforts to achieve stability, progress, and enhance security.
During the call, both sides discussed ways to rebuild diplomatic relations between the two countries, and the importance of cooperation in humanitarian and economic issues. Trudeau pointed out that Canada is reviewing the economic sanctions imposed on Syria, as part of its efforts to support the transitional phase and contribute to achieving a more stable future for the Syrian people.
For his part, the Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed his appreciation for Canada's position, emphasizing the importance of enhancing cooperation between the two countries to contribute to achieving regional security and stability. He also praised Canada's efforts to support Syrians both inside and outside the country.
The appointment of Omar Alghabra as Canada's special envoy to Syria
In a related context, the Canadian Prime Minister announced the appointment of Omar Alghabra, a member of parliament of Syrian descent, as Canada's special envoy to Syria.
Trudeau clarified that this appointment comes as part of Canada's commitment to support Syria during this transitional phase, noting that Alghabra will be tasked with advising the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly on Canadian efforts to meet the urgent needs of the Syrian people and enhance inclusive governance and protect human rights.
The Canadian envoy will also coordinate with regional and international actors, experts, and humanitarian organizations to ensure international support for the Syrian people during this pivotal phase.
Canadian commitment to humanitarian aid
Canada continues its commitment to support Syrians, as it previously announced in December 2024 the allocation of 17.25 million Canadian dollars for humanitarian aid, including areas such as health, food security, and emergency relief.
This Canadian move is part of a new diplomatic strategy aimed at supporting the rebuilding of Syria, enhancing its stability, and contributing to securing a sustainable future for its people.
