TikTok announced the launch of a new feature that allows content creators to add alternative texts (Alt text) to images published on the app, in a move aimed at improving the experience for users with visual impairments and enhancing digital inclusivity.
Alternative text is a textual description attached to images, allowing blind or visually impaired individuals to understand the content of images through precise audio descriptions via screen reader programs.
The company stated in a statement to “TechCrunch” that it has already made this feature available, allowing content creators to enter alternative text during the image upload process or even after publishing.
Thus, TikTok joins major social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter (X), and Reddit, which have previously incorporated this feature into their tools that support the experience of users with special needs.
Support for alternative text is an important addition to the accessibility feature set provided by TikTok, which also includes the ability to create automatic captions for videos and the option to adjust text size in the app interface, reflecting the platform's commitment to achieving a more inclusive and diverse user experience for all user groups.
