A technical report published by CTV News revealed that a cybersecurity researcher played a pivotal role in uncovering the identity of a suspected Canadian hacker after being threatened by this person online.

According to the details, the well-known researcher by the alias “Vx-underground” received direct threats from an individual alleged to be active in the world of cybercrime, particularly via the “X” platform (formerly Twitter). The threats included the dissemination of personal information and public harassment.

Digital tracking reveals identity

The researcher and his team used advanced techniques to track the digital footprints of the suspect, identifying him as a young Canadian named Kyle Toney, with a record of developing and promoting malware online.

According to the report, Toney is suspected of being part of cybercriminal networks that use advanced hacking tools sold or used in digital attacks on institutions and companies.

Collaboration with law enforcement

After verifying the identity, the researcher handed over the information he gathered to law enforcement agencies in Canada, which subsequently began an official investigation, without releasing additional details so far.

Rising controversy over “digital justice”

This incident highlights the increasing challenges faced by cybersecurity researchers and the pressure they may face from criminals trying to silence them. It also raises questions about the need to update legislation to protect digital professionals from targeting and extortion.
