The White House announced that the new tariffs proposed by the administration of President Donald Trump at 25% on steel imports will be imposed in addition to the other tariffs already in place, which could lead to a significant increase in import costs.
This announcement came during the visit of the Canadian provincial prime ministers to Washington, where they are seeking to push back against these measures that could directly affect trade relations between the United States and Canada.
In an official statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described this move as “unacceptable,” emphasizing that his country is working with international partners to respond firmly to this decision.
The American move has raised international concern, as the European Commission expressed its rejection of these tariffs, confirming that it will consider taking countermeasures to protect the interests of the European Union.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time tariffs have been imposed on steel and aluminum, as the Trump administration had previously applied them during his first term, leading to trade tensions and increased production costs within the United States.
