Washington - New U.S. tariffs went into effect today, Tuesday, following President Donald Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on all imports coming from Canada and Mexico, as part of measures aimed at reducing drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigration.

The White House had issued a statement last February, confirming that Washington would impose these tariffs, in addition to a 10% tariff on Canadian energy resources, until both countries cooperate with the United States in tackling smuggling and irregular migration.

In an official response, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed that Ottawa is prepared to respond to these measures, noting that her country may impose countermeasures worth up to 155 billion Canadian dollars (about 107 billion U.S. dollars). Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also stressed that Canada will not hesitate to protect its economic interests, affirming that Canadian tariffs will remain in place until the United States retracts its decisions.

This trade escalation comes amid increasing tensions among the three countries, which warns of widespread repercussions on the economy and trade in North America, as Mexico's reaction to these measures is awaited.
