(Agencies): The United Nations Security Council approved today, Monday, a resolution presented by the United States calling for a swift end to the war in Ukraine and achieving a lasting peace between Kyiv and Moscow, as the conflict enters its third year.
The resolution emphasized the need to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing the importance of accelerating diplomatic efforts to end the fighting. It also urged the parties to resume negotiations and reach a peaceful settlement based on the principles of international law and United Nations resolutions.
The resolution received broad support within the council, while some countries abstained from voting, amid divisions over how to end the conflict and the conditions that should govern any future settlement.
This development comes at a time when the Ukrainian crisis is witnessing continuous military escalation, with increasing international calls for a ceasefire and the initiation of serious political talks to end the war.
