Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez emphasized today, Wednesday, the necessity to end the double standards policy in dealing with international crises, affirming that what applies to Ukraine should also apply to the Gaza Strip, referring to the disparity in the positions of some Western countries towards humanitarian conflicts.

Sánchez said in a speech before the Spanish Parliament: “The international community cannot condemn the aggression in Ukraine while turning a blind eye to the crimes and violations in Gaza. There is a need for moral consistency in positions, otherwise our credibility as an international community will be at stake.”

In a remarkable escalation, Sánchez called on EU countries to “suspend the partnership agreement with Israel” in light of the continued violations of international law in the Palestinian territories, and also demanded a “complete ban on arms exports to Israel” until attacks on civilians cease and full compliance with international humanitarian law is ensured.

Sánchez’s statements come amid increasing European pressure on Israel following repeated UN and human rights reports accusing it of committing serious violations in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war on October 7, 2023, amid warnings of a worsening humanitarian disaster in the besieged sector.

This stance is one of the strongest official European statements calling for concrete actions against the Israeli government, reflecting a rising trend within the European Union to reconsider political and military relations with Tel Aviv.
