The Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario (PCs) achieved a new victory in the 2025 provincial elections, reinforcing its position as a dominant political force in the province. In contrast, the Ontario Liberal Party faced a major setback, as its leader Bonnie Crombie failed to win her seat in the Mississauga–Lakeshore riding, which dealt a significant blow to the party's ambitions to return to the political scene with strength.

Crombie vows to stay despite defeat

Despite losing her seat, Crombie, who took over the leadership of the Liberal Party last year, affirmed that she would not step down from her position, pledging to move forward with her strategy to rebuild the party and restore its status as a strong alternative to the current government. In her remarks after the results were announced, Crombie said:

“This is not the result we had hoped for, but I remain committed to continuing to work on strengthening the Liberal Party in Ontario. Elections are not the end of the road; they are just the beginning of a long battle to present a new vision for Ontario.”

Ontario Conservatives solidify their control

This victory confirms the continued popularity of the Progressive Conservative Party under Premier Doug Ford, who was once again able to win the support of voters thanks to his economic and social policies focused on development, infrastructure investment, and tax cuts.

The party was able to maintain its strongholds and make progress in some competitive areas, reflecting the continuity of public support for its political and administrative vision.

The future of the Liberals in Ontario

For the Liberal Party, this result represents a significant challenge to its efforts to regain the influence it lost after its crushing defeats in the 2018 and 2022 elections. Although the party saw a slight improvement in its results compared to previous elections, Crombie's loss of her seat raises questions about her leadership and her ability to revive the party.

Analysts believe that Crombie's continued position might be fraught with challenges, especially if negative results persist, which could push party members to reconsider their strategy and leadership in the near future.

What's next?

As the elections conclude, the most pressing question remains: how will the Liberals handle this loss, and whether Crombie is able to convince the party and voters that she is the best option moving forward? In contrast, Ford and the Progressive Conservatives will face increasing pressure to fulfill their electoral promises and maintain voter trust.
