In the latest move to confront the tariffs that former U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to reimpose, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston have called on U.S. state governors to urge them to oppose these tariffs, which they believe will negatively impact both the Canadian and American economies.

During meetings held this week, Ford and Houston warned that imposing new tariffs on Canadian imports could harm shared supply chains and lead to higher costs for businesses and consumers in both countries. The officials emphasized that the close economic ties between Canada and the United States require ongoing cooperation to avoid protectionist policies that could harm vital industries such as automotive, energy, and natural resources.

Ford stated in remarks to the press: “We want to work with our American partners, not against them. Imposing tariffs will hurt everyone, and we need to keep our trade borders open for mutual benefit.”

For his part, Houston emphasized the importance of dialogue between Canadian officials and their American counterparts to address any policies that may affect the shared economy, pointing out that state governors play a crucial role in pressuring the federal administration to avoid such measures.

The Canadian government, at various levels, is seeking to take proactive steps to protect mutual economic interests and prevent a recurrence of the trade disputes witnessed during his previous presidency.
