The eyes of the political and security circles in Israel turned yesterday to the head of the Shin Bet security service, David Zini, after he announced in official statements that he opposes reaching a deal with Hamas that would lead to the release of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza, unless the war objectives that Israel considers vital are achieved.

Zini, who recently took office succeeding Ronin Bar, affirmed that his position stems from a firm conviction that the ongoing war is not merely a response to the October 7 attack, but rather an “existential” battle aimed at ensuring the long-term security of the Jewish state, according to his expression.

He added that rushing to reach an agreement with Hamas under the current circumstances would constitute an “indirect reward” for the movement and would undermine Israeli deterrence, calling for the continuation of military operations until the dismantling of Hamas's military and political capabilities is achieved.

Zini's statements sparked wide reactions within Israel, as observers considered them an indication of the increasing security influence on political decision-making, while others viewed his stance as reflecting the security establishment's tendencies toward tightening pressure on Gaza, even if it contradicts the rising international pressures for a ceasefire and reaching a humanitarian settlement.

In a related context, Israeli media reported that the Security Cabinet held an extended session to discuss scenarios for the upcoming phase, amid disagreement among ministers regarding balancing military goals with humanitarian and diplomatic considerations, especially in light of the deteriorating conditions in Gaza and the increasing criticisms from Western allies.

These statements come amid ongoing military escalation in Gaza, at a time when international calls for an immediate ceasefire and for an agreement ensuring the return of Israeli prisoners in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners are increasing, a deal that has yet to be finalized despite months of mediation.
