The Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's government has introduced a new bill aimed at reducing trade barriers between Canadian provinces and facilitating the implementation of major national projects in the fields of energy and infrastructure. This legislation is part of a broader plan aimed at boosting economic growth and achieving greater integration in the Canadian internal market.

According to what Minister of Innovation and Industry Dominique LeBlanc announced, the bill seeks to remove bureaucratic and regulatory obstacles that hinder the flow of goods and services between provinces, while granting the federal government expanded powers to support and coordinate nationally important strategic projects, including clean energy and hydrogen projects, transmission lines, and railways.

Prime Minister Carney stated in his remarks: “This legislation is not just about removing barriers, but about building a more interconnected and competitive nation in the twenty-first century.” He emphasized that the project balances respect for regional authorities and the necessity to unify efforts to achieve Canada’s economic and climate objectives.

This move comes at a time when the country faces challenges related to productivity and investment, and Carney hopes that the project will contribute to creating new jobs, improving the efficiency of the national market, and enhancing Canada’s position as a global hub for clean energy.

The bill awaits extensive discussion in Parliament amidst expectations of lively debates with provincial governments, which may view some of its provisions as an infringement on their constitutional powers.
