French President Emmanuel Macron called for the establishment of a new global system based on respect for international law and the independence and sovereignty of nations, emphasizing that the current system is no longer capable of addressing contemporary challenges or ensuring justice and stability in international relations.
In a speech delivered at an international forum on global governance in Paris, Macron stated: “We cannot remain hostages to a global system established in the post-World War II era, while we are now facing intertwined crises that require more just, inclusive, and respectful mechanisms for the sovereignty of peoples.”
The French president emphasized that respect for international law should be the cornerstone of any new global system, indirectly criticizing the double standards followed by some major countries in their handling of international conflicts.
He added: “We need genuine international cooperation, based on balanced dialogue and respect for the sovereignty of states, away from dictates and hegemony,” calling for the reform of institutions such as the United Nations Security Council and the World Trade Organization to be more representative and effective.
Macron's statements come amid rising geopolitical crises globally, from the war in Ukraine to the conflict in Gaza, at a time when the debate about the future of the global system and the balance of international power is intensifying.
