The Canadian Parliament resumed its sessions today amidst a renewed political atmosphere, following the appointment of the new Prime Minister Mark Carney and the formation of a government that carries many new faces, at a time when Carney has vowed to move quickly to pass a bill to reduce tax brackets.

In his opening speech before the House of Commons, Carney confirmed that his government will make “reducing the tax burden on working Canadians” a top priority during the early weeks of the parliamentary session, pointing out that the proposed bill will provide low- and middle-income Canadians with “a real opportunity to catch their breath amidst the pressing economic conditions.”

The proposal aims to reduce tax rates on the first income brackets, in a step that is expected to receive partial support from opposition parties, especially with increasing public pressure to address high living costs and ongoing inflation.

The Parliament is witnessing a new composition of representatives, as a result of the recent elections which brought a noticeable renewal in parliamentary faces, while the Canadian public is awaiting whether the new government will succeed in implementing its reform promises or face political obstacles in passing its agenda.

It is expected that the relevant committees will begin studying the draft tax amendments in the coming days, amidst indications that the government is seeking to pass the legislation before the parliamentary summer recess.
