Ottawa – Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized on Friday the importance of working with allies and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reach a fair peace agreement for Ukraine, amid the ongoing Russian aggression. Joly's remarks came during an event held in Vancouver, according to Bloomberg News.

Diplomatic Tension After Zelensky and Trump Meeting

Joly's statements followed a meeting between Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, which saw a tense atmosphere and escalated into a sharp verbal exchange. According to reports, Zelensky left the White House without signing an agreement that had been planned regarding critical minerals, which later led to public criticism from Trump via social media, where he accused the Ukrainian president of “disrespect.”

Canada's Position and Calls for International Unity

Commenting on Zelensky's position, Joly praised his leadership and courage, affirming that he "will not accept a bad deal." She added, "It is essential that we work with him and with our international partners to ensure that an agreement serves Ukraine’s interests and security."

The Canadian minister warned of the strategic consequences of any unfair agreement, saying, "If we do not get a good deal for Ukraine, it will send the wrong message to Russia. We know that President Vladimir Putin does not recognize red lines, and if left unchecked, NATO territory may be threatened, putting all of us at risk."

Implications of the Conflict on Global Security

This Canadian stance comes amid growing international concern about the implications of the war in Ukraine, as Canada and Western countries continue to support Kyiv diplomatically and militarily, amid efforts to reach a political solution that ensures Ukraine's sovereignty and maintains European security.

These developments highlight the ongoing disagreements over how to manage the Ukrainian crisis, especially in light of the tensions in relations between Washington and Kyiv, and the challenges facing the Western alliance in addressing Russian escalation.
