Libya is witnessing a crisis in recent days due to the death of the political activist Sraj Daghaman.

The Canadian Embassy in Libya announced its support for the United Nations mission in urging a transparent and independent investigation into the "tragic death" of the political activist Sraj Daghaman during his detention.

The Canadian Embassy called for the immediate release of individuals held arbitrarily, emphasizing the importance of respecting legal processes and the rule of law, according to a tweet on its account on the social networking site "X" today, Monday.

The embassy shared a statement from the UN Support Mission in Libya expressing its "deep sorrow" over Daghaman's death while in custody at the Rajma military camp, demanding a transparent investigation into the incident.

The mission stated that Daghaman had been arbitrarily arrested and detained since early October 2023, along with "Fathi Al-Bajjah, Tarek Al-Bashari, Salim Al-Areibi, and Nasir Al-Daesi," and no charges had been brought against them, nor had they appeared before a court, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained individuals.

The Head of the Internal Security Agency in Benghazi stated that Daghaman died while attempting to escape from the restroom in his prison last Friday morning, while bloggers talked about the "murder" of the 35-year-old activist, stating that the circumstances of his death were "unnatural," and lawyer Abdul Hafeez Ghogha called for an investigation into his "murder."

The internal security forces had detained Daghaman for more than six months, along with former Transitional Council member Dr. Fathi Al-Bajjah, and political activist Tarek Al-Bashari, without referring them to the public prosecution or formally charging them with specific offenses.
