Polls for voters in the Mexican elections revealed that government candidate Claudia Sheinbaum is on track to win the presidential election.
This came according to a survey conducted by the financial newspaper "El Financiero" and the radio station "Televisa" following the closure of polling stations on Sunday night.
Sheinbaum, a close ally of current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from the ruling leftist Moren party, would be the first woman to assume the presidency in the country if elected.
It is worth noting that her main competitor in the elections is Xóchitl Gálvez, the candidate supported by a broad coalition of the three largest opposition parties in the country.
The third candidate is Jorge Álvarez Máynez from a small party, who seems to have no chance of winning.
The official preliminary results are expected to be released in the next few hours.
To win the election, a simple majority is sufficient.
In addition to the presidential election, Mexicans voted in elections for both houses of Congress as well as regional and municipal elections, making this day a historic electoral day.
In total, there are over 20,000 positions contested in the largest Spanish-speaking country by population, including governorships in eight of the 31 federal states and in the capital region.
About 100 million citizens were eligible to vote in the elections.
