On the day voting begins in the U.S. presidential elections, questions are being raised in the Israeli media about which of the competing candidates would be better for Israel if they win the race.
The newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" states that estimates in Israel indicate that the victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump will assist the Israeli authorities in "thwarting initiatives" like those related to implementing the "two-state solution," while the arrival of his Democratic competitor Kamala Harris to the White House will lead to increased pressure on Israel in this regard.
The newspaper mentioned that the likelihood of a "forced" settlement on Israel unilaterally seems greater in the event that Harris wins.
Yedioth Ahronoth speculated that if Trump wins the presidency, he might attempt to revive what is known as the "Deal of the Century," which revolves around establishing a Palestinian state and normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
The newspaper anticipated that the Democratic candidate would be less friendly toward Israel if she wins the presidency compared to current President Joe Biden, noting that the potential Democratic administration "will increase pressure on Israel regarding the two-state solution and the Palestinian issue."
Yedioth Ahronoth considered that Harris adopts "a more pro-Palestinian stance, and she will work to revive the Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip." The Israeli newspaper predicted that any potential sanctions related to "settler violence" in the West Bank would be harsher in the event of Harris winning the presidency than those already imposed by the Biden administration.
Regarding dealings with Iran, Yedioth Ahronoth did not rule out reaching a new nuclear agreement with Tehran, whether Trump or Harris wins the upcoming elections, amid estimates that the Republican candidate would exert more pressure on Iran in favor of Israel if he were the winning candidate.
Trump had withdrawn during his presidency from the nuclear agreement that had been reached between major powers and Iran during the administration of his Democratic predecessor Barack Obama.
He also imposed sanctions on Tehran to force it to agree to a new nuclear agreement with stricter terms than the previous nuclear deal.
