Tensions have risen along the border between Canada and the United States after U.S. President Donald Trump announced strict measures to stop illegal immigration, accusing Canada of allowing large numbers of migrants to enter U.S. territory. In response, the Canadian government announced the strengthening of security measures at its borders, deploying more security personnel and equipment, including helicopters and drones equipped with thermal cameras, and tightening temporary visa issuance procedures.

Canadian authorities clarified that these measures have led to a decrease in illegal crossings into the United States; however, The New York Times pointed to a new phenomenon involving an increasing number of migrants trying to flee the United States to Canada amid the campaign led by President Trump to deport undocumented migrants, particularly Venezuelans, who have lost the temporary protection granted to them by the previous U.S. administration.

In this context, Canadian media reports revealed the apprehension of a group of nine migrants, including children, as they attempted to cross into the Canadian province of Alberta on foot in harsh weather conditions. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported that most of them are from Venezuela and Colombia.

The Canadian government faces increasing challenges due to the "Safe Third Country" agreement signed with the United States, which mandates the return of asylum seekers to the first safe country they reached. As pressures on migrants inside the United States increase, activists and lawyers specializing in immigration issues have warned of a potential rise in the number of refugees attempting to cross into Canada through unofficial means.

For his part, Canadian Immigration Minister Marc Miller confirmed that the government is "monitoring the situation closely," emphasizing that anyone entering Canada illegally will be returned in accordance with the agreement with the United States. He added that his country is prepared to handle any potential developments, while adhering to "firm and fair" policies regarding immigration and asylum.
