The New Brunswick Teachers' Federation warned of a severe shortage of teachers in the province, noting that the situation is worsening and affecting the quality of education in schools.
Jeffrey Laffles, the president of the federation, stated in an official statement that schools are suffering from a lack of teaching staff, forcing current teachers to take on additional burdens, which negatively impacts the learning environment for students. He added that many classrooms are currently being managed by non-specialist teachers or substitute staff to fill the gap, which is not sustainable in the long term.
The federation emphasized the urgent need to hire more teachers and provide incentives to attract them, warning that the continued shortage could have serious implications for the quality of education and the future of students in the province.
The federation calls on the regional government to take urgent action, such as improving salaries and offering additional benefits, to attract more teachers and encourage graduates to enter the teaching profession.
This call comes amid increasing reports of the workload pressures faced by current teachers, which may lead some to leave the profession, further exacerbating the educational crisis in New Brunswick.
